Prisoners actress Maria Bello has revealed that she is a lesbian, and is in a serious relationship with her "best friend" Clare in a recent article she wrote for The New York Times titled Coming Out as a Modern Family.

The news comes after the actress was extremely ill over the summer with a parasitic infection and, as she was supported and comforted by those closest to her, her bond with Clare grew stronger.

Published in The New York Times on Friday, Bello revealed that her relationship with her old friend is not what she first expected but that she "couldn't help but smile" after their romance blossomed.

With Bello concerned about what others would think, she kept her relationship under wraps until she was sure it would be best for herself and her family. But when she and Clare finally got together, she realised it had all been a long-winded process.

“What had I been waiting for all of these years? She is the person I like being with the most, the one with whom I am most myself,” she wrote.

With her confession printed in black and white, she revealed that her biggest worry was telling her 12-year-old son Jackson, as she knew he trusted Clare "like a godmother". His simple reply? "Mom, love is love, whatever you are."

The 46-year-old told how she and Clare met in a bar many years ago on New Year’s Eve.

“We had an immediate connection but didn’t think of it as romantic or sexual,” Bello explained. “She was one of the most beautiful, charming, brilliant and funny people I had ever met, but it didn’t occur to me, until that soul-searching moment in my garden that we could perhaps choose to love each other romantically.”

With her parents’ backing, Bello's relationship with Clare is now public and they can lead a life outside of the shadows.

“My father's response came between puffs of his cigar while we sat on the roof of a casino in Atlantic City... ‘She's a good girl, good for you’.”

As well as Prisoners, Bello also known for her roles in Coyote Ugly and Grown Ups.

We wish Maria and Clare the best of luck.
