Some might argue that it’s January, when Christmas is over and the bleak reality of a new year sets in. Others might point a finger towards the freezing rain of November when winter, to steal a phrase from the Stark family crest, is officially coming. But if you ask me, out of all of the months, September is undoubtedly the worst. After all it’s the page on our calendars that’s responsible for the end of summer, the return to school and when traditionally we have to bid farewell top a season of wall-to-wall blockbusters. But whilst it might not boast the same kind of riches we’ve become used to in a summer season crammed full of sci-fi spectaculars, action adventures and CGI enhanced superheroics; there’s still plenty to get excited about at the cinema this September. So to help you separate the ‘must sees’ from the ‘watch-on-DVDs’ join us as we look at what will be hitting the multiplex in the month ahead.

Sure, a plot that involves Domhall Gleeson’s time-traveller attempting to win back his beau Rachel McAdams, offers a fresh take on the genre. But if it looks like a rom-com, talks like a rom-com and no doubt smells like a rom-com; then we’re going to go out on a limb and say it’s a rom-com.Perfect for… Do you want to laugh whilst having your belief in true love reaffirmed over the course of 90minutes? Then you’ll have probably learned to stay away from rom-coms in recent years. If you’re in need of a reminder however, then About Time is the film for you.topMovies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: About Time – 4 September - 2(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 SeptemberThe long awaited third outing of Vin Diesel’s glinty-eyed antihero makes land this month. The film, which is the first foray from the franchise in almost a decade; sees the titular hero marooned on an alien wasteland with only a collection of creepy critters and Battlestar Galactica’s Katie Sackoff for company.Perfect for… Sci-fi fans who’ve waited patiently for an opportunity to wash the foul taste of 2004’s magnum opus of awfulness The Chronicles of Riddick, away from their collective mouth holes.topMovies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Riddick – 4 September - 3(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 SeptemberWe might not understand the rules, the seemingly endless ad breaks, or why a nation decided to christen a jumped up game of rounders as its national pastime; but Baseball is still strangely popular amongst British film fans. Not because we watch it of course, but because Hollywood’s bases have been loaded with brilliant baseball movies down the years. The latest latest flick to hit the big screen is 42 (starring Harrison Ford), which follows the true life tale of American icon Jackie Robinson, the first black athlete to play Major League Baseball;Perfect for… Whilst its no Field of Dreams – to be honest its not even in the same league as A League of their Own – 42 is still likely to hit a homerun with sports fans when it lands in cinemas this month.topMovies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: 42 -13 September - 4(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 SeptemberPrepare for another week of sleepless nights as James Wan returns to scare the bejesus out of us with this fright-inducing sequel to Insidious, the pant-moistening horror movie that first wowed fans in 2010.Perfect for… Fans of the first film will know just what to expect from a sequel that picks right up where its predecessor’s creepy cliffhanger left off.topMovies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Insidious 2 – 13 September - 5(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 SeptemberHabitual blower-up-er Roland Emmerich steps behind the camera for this action thriller in which Channing Tatum *swoon* has to protect a Jamie Foxx-shaped President after the White House is attacked by terrorists. It’s basically Die Hard meets the West Wing, and if you’re thinking that’s a premise you’ve seen somewhere before then you’d be right. After all it’s basically the same situation that Gerard Butler endured when the infinitely superior Olympus Has Fallen landed on our screens earlier this year.Perfect for… It’s not the best action movie you’ll see this year – it’s not even the best action movie involving terrorists attacking the White House. But film fans looking to scratch their itch for action, slow motion explosions and mid-gunfight banter will find plenty to enjoy here.topMovies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: White House Down – 13 September - 6(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 SeptemberHalle Berry stars in this low budget but high concept thriller as a gutsy 9-1-1 operator who winds up on the end of a serial killer’s calls. Originally conceived as a TV series, the tale was eventually spun into a movie that surprisingly stormed the box office when it was released across the pond. Perfect for… Anyone looking to perch on the edge of their seat, or leap out of it entirely, after handing over their hard earned cash.topMovies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: The Call – 20 September - 7(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 SeptemberNaomi Watts does a Meryl Streep and lays the bait for Academy voters with a pitch-perfect impersonation of a British public figure in Diana. That public figure is of course the titular Princess of Wales, whose life gets the big screen biopic treatment at the hands of German director Oliver Hirschbiegel later this month. Perfect for… The film’s already courted its fair share of controversy. But a winning performance from two-time Oscar nominee Naomie Watts alongside audiences’ continued fascination with the People’s Princess, should still ensure that plenty of people file into theatres when Diana arrives. .topMovies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Diana – 20 September - 8(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 SeptemberWhatever happened to Ryan Reynolds’ career? The Canadian actor was at one point one of Hollywood’s bright young things, but has since seen his star dim after a series of dud roles that culminated in 2011’s comic book monstrosity Green Lantern. Well in case we’d forgotten how bad films could be, Reynolds is  back on the big screen this month to prove there’s still plenty to scrape off of the bottom of this particular box office barrel. He stars alongside Jeff Bridge in R.I.P.D; an adaptation of the hit comic book of the same name that bears more than a passing resemblance to Men In Black, only with the aliens swapped out for the undead.Perfect for… The source material is superb, sadly however this overblown attempt to bring it to the silver screen is shaping up to be one of the year’stopMovies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: R.I.P.D – 20 September - 9(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 SeptemberWoody Allen’s latest hits the cinema this month, and that in itself is sure to entice a certain section of the cinemagoing public into the nearest theatre. For the rest of us though there’s an all star cast – fronted by Alec Baldwin and Cate Blanchett – to look forward to, alongside a topical tragi-comic tale about a woman who’s swindled out of her money that might just prove to be one of the year’s most well-written flicks.Perfect for… Allen fans and anyone looking to dust off the summer cobwebs with a little high-minded humour.topMovies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Blue Jasmine – 27 September - 10(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 SeptemberHe sang his heart out in Les Miserables, exercised his funny bones in Movie 42 and flexed his muscles as the adamantium-laced antihero in this summer’s The Worlverine. But now the omni-talented Hugh Jackman is showing off his acting chops in this tale of a desperate father who’ll go to just about any lengths to find his kidnapped daughter. It is by all accounts, a gut-wrenching thriller. One, that with a cast that includes the likes of Viola Davis, Terence Howard and Jake Gyllenhaal; might just be the worthiest movie to hit the multiplex this month.Perfect for… Fans of good films and great acting who want to be reminded the cinema isn’t just reserved for CGI laden spectaculars and spandex-clad superheroics.  topMovies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)Movies to watch in September: Prisoners – 27 September - 11(©Rex)
