Although our winter coats and jackets tend to be an investment piece for the season, this year there are lots of styles out there that won’t break the bank. With retailers slashing the prices, the sky’s the limit with what’s on offer.

When considering your winter coat, it’s worth considering a coat that will still be stylish after one season. Also, be sure to also keep in mind what suits you. While styles, tastes and body shapes differ, ensure you get the fit just right. Sleeve lengths too long or short, or shoulders that are too big for your size (excluding the 80’s look) can look sloppy and take from your coat. So if it doesn’t fit, leave it sit!

Sugar Coated has never been more apparent with vibrant colours available too.  Even if you’re considering spending more than our budget for this article, the below style tips apply to any coat purchase, big or small.

After a scout around and some sneak previews, here are some of my favourites for under €150, to brighten up your day.

F&F signature double breasted coat in Purple from Tesco €69 (pictured)

This style encompasses the crop sleeve, skinny clip belt, and pleating. Available at selected stores that carry the F&F range from this week. It works well for a straighter figure to give you some curves, with the belt and pleating detail. Also good for the more flat chested gal, drawing the eye to the button detail. (Take it from our editor, who was longing after this Balenciaga lookalike coat. She tried it on and to her dismay, this really doesn’t suit a short and curvy gal).

Belted Big Collar Coat in Deep blue and red Topshop.com £75, €84 (pictured)

This is a great style for the more curvaceous woman with single button closing and large tie belt. If you are large chested, the single button closing and deep v opening is also flattering for your figure.

Belted Funnel Coat Dorothy Perkins £56, €63 (Pictured)

Available in the tall and regular size range in a fantastic cobalt blue colour. Asymmetric closing with belt and contrast black button detail. Also comes in red and black.

Double Collared Coat Dorothy Perkins £85, €95

This trendy double breasted and collared coat sits neatly at the hips with waisted belt detail and brass buttons. If you are a little on the shorter side this is a good military style to opt for.

Check Coat from Savida Dunnes Stores €60

Great check print with asymmetric hem and waisted with a check belt. This style works well with an hourglass figure. Looks great with office wear or with a pair of black skinny jeans and boots.

Faux Fur Collarless Coat in Pink River Island €87

Loving this cosy furry number. Great for jazzing up an outfit on a night out. Suits the fun at heart!

Crinkle PU Bomber Jacket Heatons €30

If you just can’t spare the cash for a leather jacket this season, there are some really good leather imitations out there for a fraction of the price. This one from Heatons has a really soft leather feel with a funnel collar and studding detail. Available in denim blue and black, both can be teamed up with a lot of colours and at this price you could pick up both! If you are a little shorter in height this cropped style works well for you.

Prefer  a more classic coat?

Here are few timeless pieces:

F&F Signature Belted Wool Coat Tesco €69

Classic wouldn’t be classic without including the camel coloured coat. I really like this version from Tesco with single button closing and contrast belt detail. It’s a classic style with a feminine touch that will last you season after season. Again the single breasted style is good if you are large chested. Also a flattering style for a straighter figure, the belt detail will give the illusion of a more curved waist.

Reefer Jacket Warehouse €117 (pictured)

This black reefer style coat is really versatile, it looks great heading to work or dressed down at the weekends. The shoulder and button detail add a little something special to the reliable black coat. It suits most body types; if you are a little heavy chested, avoid the double breasted style. Also, check out their zip off coat which is another great style with the added bonus of wearing it short or long.

Funnel Neck Mac Wallis £45, €50

I am a big fan of funnel necks in the winter, even better when I find the style incorporated into a wardrobe stable! This mac has a really nice shine finish and bell sleeves, can be worn by day and night. And I can’t resist mentioning that it comes in purple too!

Double Layer Coat from Dunnes Stores €50

For the ultimate in neutral you can opt for a cream coat. In  fact, this double layered hem style from Dunnes is a steal at €50!

Caring for your winter coat

Remember when you bring home your new purchase to take good care of it:

- Soft leathers hung on coats stands can tend to get an imprint from the hook if left there too long. - When on a night out, wrap your coat inside out if you’re leaving it on a chair or couch, especially if it’s cream! - Get yourself a lint roller, it keeps your darker coat looking sharp.

So kick into action and wrap up in style this winter.
