Years before Marilyn Manson ripped up a Bible onstage at a Nine Inch Nails show in Salt Lake City, Sinéad O'Connor courted religious controversy by ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II on live TV. The Irish singer appeared on Saturday Night Live in October 1992 to promote her then new covers album Am I Not Your Girl?, singing Success Has Made a Failure of Our Home and Bob Marley's War. It was after singing the latter song that she did what she did, adding, "Fight the real enemy." O'Connor was subsequently banned from the show for life, and her career went off the rails.
