Mr Selfridge: Jeremy Piven is back
Jeremy Piven, award-winning actor of Entourage fame, leads the cast for the second series of Mr Selfridge. A dramatisation of American entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge, ITV is surely hoping for more success with a period drama I have rather facetiously dubbed 'Down-till Abbey'.
Also returning to enthral the viewing audience is Katherine Kelly; best known for her role as Becky McDonald in Coronation Street, she proved she could hold her own with the best Hollywood has to offer. Katherine ended up stealing every scene in which she appeared during the first series.
Mr Selfridge tells the story of 'Mile a Minute Harry', a man with a mission to make shopping as thrilling as sex. Pioneering and reckless (and played with an almost manic energy by Jeremy Piven), he created an unforgettable retail experience which is still taking pride of place on London's Oxford Street.
The second series picks up the story in 1914 as the store celebrates its fifth anniversary of trading. Five years have passed already? Time flies. Harry is proud of the store’s success, but with rumours rife of war in Europe, he prepares his staff for challenging times ahead.
Series two maintains the lavish production values of series one; it's sumptuous, oozes quality and is easy on the eye. It deserves to be the hit it is for ITV. Get a flavour of the show, which airs on Sunday 19 January at 9pm, as we delve into the world of Mr Selfridge.
